Sverdrup Steel aims at a 100% sorting and recycling rate to cut GHG emissions – on top of our low-footprint recycled steel grades.

«In 2025, we saved 164 tonnes of CO2 – just from recycling at our three divisions in Norway, Denmark and the UK», says HSEQ & Sustainability Manager Gunn Holm-Jensen at Sverdrup Steel. The company’s waste separation rate turned out to be 96% in 2025.
«Sverdrup’s next challenge is to match the separation rate with a 100% recycling rate. »
Sverdrup applies the principles of reuse and recirculation to optimize the lifecycle of resources in our value chain. Lifecycle emission for steel products depends largely on its proportion of recycled material. The global average of recycled material in stainless steel is approximately 45%. For Sverdrup, this figure is above 85%.
«Sverdrup discloses CO2e emissions based on emission factors containing 85% scrap metal content,» says Holm-Jensen.
In addition to the CO2 footprint from recycled steel materials, there is a CO2 reduction from waste recycling. This reduction is calculated and reported separately from Sverdrup’s scope 3 GHG inventories.
«Sverdrup values climate results even if they don’t fit into the current emission accounting practices. At the same time, we expect the forthcoming GHG Protocol Project Quantification Standard to enable us to report waste recycling as GHG mitigation projects. This will set a new benchmark for GHG reporting in the steel value chain», says Holm-Jensen.

Sverdrup states as a company objective the UN SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production: Sverdrup’s goal is to use less products in our business-related activities and have a 100% sorting rate at all our locations. Our steel products are 100% recyclable and last a lifetime.
