Stainless Steel – A part of the green solution

By News

Most likely when being asked if stainless steel is an environmental friendly product. Most people will say no. This answer is most likely based on the fact that it is associated with heavy duty applications. Like ships, automotive, aerospace and heavy industry. And the fact that a lot of energy is needed in the production of steel. To an extent, this is true, but one has to take a look at the whole picture to reach a sound conclusion.

So why is stainless steel a part of the solution in our efforts to solve the environmental challenges we face?

Well for starters, stainless steel is produced using 85% recycled material. There aren’t that many materials that are 100% recyclable an infinite number of times without it losing its key properties such as strength and corrosion resistance. It is also worth noting that, with the notable exception of austenitic grades, all stainless steel has magnetic properties, allowing them to be easily separated from the recycling stream.

Co2 emissions stemming for the production of stainless steel is far less than that of other comparable materials such as aluminum and iron. This is because production methods are highly modernized and the fact that coal is not used in the production of stainless steel. In fact, the start of the modern production of stainless steel fueled the development of hydropower, for example in Italy in the early 20th century.

The high strength of stainless steel alloys allows for thinner products that leads to less weight. In turn this means that less energy is needed to move object built in stainless steel compared to those built in structural steel or carbon steel.

There is hardly any doubt in the minds of experts that stainless steel is one of the most durable and long-lasting substances in the world. Much of its impeccable durability and endurance can be owed to its incredible corrosion resistance. Since stainless steel can last for decades, if not centuries, it earns the right to be called a green alloy simply based on its longevity. It is also worth noting that stainless steel is among the most hygienic materials in the world and requires minimal use of cleaning agents to be properly maintained.

For example, had the Golden Gate bridge been built in stainless there would be no need for the application of 5000 – 10 000 gallons of paint yearly in maintenance.

Stainless Steel alloys are integrated and crucial for many green technological products

In almost all products produced to clean emissions to our air, stainless steel is crucial. Catalytic converters, diesel filters, marine scrubbers etc.

In applications that reduce the use of fossil fuels. Stainless Steel condensing boilers have a 100% efficiency rating. Solar panels utilize stainless steel to ensure a long-life span and to reduce their weight so that they can be installed on buildings and raised from the ground. The improvement of the efficiency of fuel cells needs stainless steel to support the electrodes.

Stainless steel is used to produce waste water and water cleaning systems. Stainless steel pipes for drinking systems help to keep water clean and quality standards high. Stainless steel guarantees lasting hygiene and prevents the formation of any medium on which bacteria can grow. Correct grade selection will minimize the risk of any localized corrosion, meaning there is practically no contamination of water in contact with the stainless steel.

Stainless Steel World 2019 was a great success

By News

Stainless Steel World is a steel and machning expo held biennial in Maastricht, with over 280 exhibitors and 6500 middle-to-higher management visitors. For Sverdrup Steel the Stainless Steel World is a very good fit. It is an expo that has been attracting the global players for many years. We get to take the pulse on the market segment that is our niche of high performance stainless steel grades. In addition to present an opportunity to meet with partner suppliers as well as longstanding and potentially new customer relations.

Again this year Sverdrup Steel is very happy with the three days in Maastricht. We have had a large number of customers, suppliers and partners in the booth, but also a lot of new faces that have been very positive. This is one of our most important trade shows during the year, that is why we appreciate the event and the people it brings.

With people from all over the world, you get many different languages and cultures. Sverdrup Steel was represented by staff on stand from both Norway, Germany, Poland and the Netherlands to give people a small sense of home. Sverdrup Steel also took the opportunity to present our values as handheld signs, and several of the visitors were able to photograph themselves with their favourite Sverdrup value. When the expo calmed down in the afternoons, we gathered a good amount of known and unknown faces for good conversations and cold beverages.

We thank you again for your efforts and a good event Stainless Steel World, see you next time!

We’re Joining Are Strandli towards Tokyo 2020

By News

We are delighted to inform that we will work with Are Strandli towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Are, along with his companion are among the world’s best rowers in the sport double sculler. When they won bronze at the Rio Olympics, they were also awarded the Fearney’s Honorary Award for Norway’s best performance during the Olympics.

Our contribution allows are to spend more time focusing on training. In turn we hope that Are will inspire our organization as we learn more about how an Olympic gold medal candidate systematically work towards their goal.

In the initial stages of our collobaration it has been interesting to learn that the values set by the duo share many simalerities with the values established by our team at Sverdrup Steel.

Are and Kristoffer have been in the top of the world rankings for the last 6-7 years and have been on the podium in all the major championships (World Cup, European Championship and Olympics). This indicates that their goal for Tokyo 2020 is nothing short of achievable.

The season has recently started with training at the Olympiatoppen in Oslo, but they will leave for Portugal for an 11 day training camp december the 9th, where they finally get some rowing done in water.

Believe it or not – rowing is actually a small sport in Norway, but worldwide there are over a 100 countries fighting for the same medal. We wish Are and Kristoffer good luck in the journey to another Olympic medal. You have all 70 of us cheering for you!

Renate Mannes showing her favourite value

Summary of Offshore Technology Days 2019

By News

After two great days on stand during Offshore Technology Days in Stavanger, we can sum up with a good attendance and plenty of nice conversations. It is always good to see customers, partners and suppliers, and not just talk to them on the phone.

OTD is the meeting place where professionals from the oil and energy business meet and share technical and commercial experience. Its every other year in Stavanger – the opposite year of the huge ONS in the same expo area. (And in Bergen the opposite year.)

The fair was held on wednesday and thursday where the wednesday ended with a great Octoberfest with great food and drinks, entertainment and awards. Renate Mannes from Key Account Sales was on hand and we had a chat with her to hear what her experience of the show was.

Renate – first of all. Are you happy with our presence at OTD?

– Yes, absolutely, I am. Many visitors. We had a nice, spacious stand with a very good location in Hall E surrounded by many interesting companies.

Did you meet the contacts you wanted to meet?

– Got to meet many of them, but not all. I attended the expo at thursday. Was probably a bit quieter than the first day. Some of the explanation lies there I think. In addition, many simply have too busy days that they have not set aside time to visit the expo. But it is often just when it would have been wise to make a visit, and perhaps make new contacts.

Was it anything under OTD that stood out from other exhibitons in the same segment?

– There are many local companies. The expo is not too big either. It is easy to get an overview of all exhibitors.

Is this a expo you would like to attend again?

– Yes it is, both as an exhibitor and visitor.

We saw earlier that your favorite value in Sverdrup Steel is love – can you elaborate on the choice?

– All you need is love! We care about and respect our colleagues, customers and suppliers, and of course family. We are good at taking care of and supporting each other. With this value in the core, we have the foundation for our other good values.

To summarize, we would like to thank you Renate for solid answers, and at the same time we would like to thank OTD for a fine execution of the expo. See you at OTD in Bergen 2020?

The reception of customers and turnover generated in such a short time really speaks for itself and is a testimony to Min-Young and his team. It is the proof that they have succeeded.

In addition to the plate stock, we have added a coil stock. This means that we are now able to deliver cut to length plates enabling us to provide the same service in South East Asia. As we do for our European customers from Burg.

Sverdrup Steel is awarded: Business Success of the year

By News

This year we got to bring the gilded bore crown home to our fantastic team at Sverdrup Steel. Every last one of our employees has contributed to the performance of 2018 that earned Sverdrup Steel the award for Business Success of the Year. So we would like thank all of our dedicated staff in the Sverdrup Steel Group. It is both an honor and an exciting experience to receive such a recognition amongst so many strong candidates.

The recognitions serves as a motivation going forward in 2019, a year that is shaping up to be another record breaking year for Sverdrup Steel. With this continuous rapid growth we know we will face some challenges, and we know new opportunities will be presented. With our strong team displaying the same level of effort and efficiency. Coupled with strong partners on the supply side we are confident that the challenges will be overcome and the opportunities will be turned in to new long term business relations.

Here is the reasoning of the Jury: Business Success of the Year

“The winner of the Gullkronen 2019 Business Success Award proves that belief in your own abilities and investment during downturns hold great value. At the heel of the industry cycle, the company took great risk doubling down on its core oil & gas offering as it expanded its presence in the highly competitive South Korean market. “Steeling” the show, the company’s revenues broke the 1 billion kroner ceiling in 2018 off the back of an unprecedented 70% growth year-on-year.

The winner continues to perform exceptionally, with 2019 slated to become another all-time-high. Truly the alchemist of the oil & gas service industry, the company turns steel into gold.”

Sverdrup Steel now hold a vast stock range of coil, plate and round bar throughout Europe and in Korea. This along with our highly qualified metallurgists, knowledgeable sales team and our strong supply chain partners has made us a global provider within the special steel grades segment.

Sverdrup Steel is winning more business from our existing customers and rapidly winning the trust of new customers all over the globe. Becoming the preferred partner for a large number of customers for special steel grades material.

Germany is an important market for us in Europe. We have built a strong stock of coil and plate in Burg over the last few years. This allows us in partnership with ESC Burg to deliver cut to length plates, standard formats and a range of profiles on short delivery times. Logistically Burg is in a strong geographical position as it has easy access to transport by road, air and sea.

In 2019 we are increasing the volumes of stock at this location. The alloys we stock in Burg are: LDX 2101, EDX 2304, Duplex 1.4462, Super Duplex 1.4410, 6Mo 1.4547 and Nickel Alloy 31.

This increase is based on the positive response we have had in the German market.

“We are attracting new customers in the market at such a pace that we now feel the timing is right to expand our team with a sales resource in the German market”, says Sales Director Export, Mr Erik Sandell. It is Mr. Sandell who is heading up Sverdrup Steels international expansion and the strategy that has been defined.

“Sverdrup Steels growth has been achieved through building sustainable organic growth, increased stock levels as well as the competence of our sales and metallurgical teams.

This allows us to support our customers with short lead times, to solve challenges about material choice, availability, specifications etc. To ensure on time deliveries combined with competitive prices and top quality.” COO Mr. Knut Tore Erevik elaborates.

Sverdrup Steel is looking to add to our team with someone who has experience in our product range and knowledge of end users in the German market.

This employee will be responsible for meeting our strategy and achieving the goals and objectives for the German end user market.

We will introduce them to the Sverdrup Steel values and our way of conducting sales. We will agree a time line for when milestones should be reached.

As you would expect from a group like Sverdrup we will continuously provide the support needed in order to succeed with these objectives.
