Austenitic stainless steel

Austenitic stainless steel is the most common type of stainless steel, accounting for more than 70% of all stainless steel produced. It has high levels of chromium and nickel, as well as low levels of carbon, making it highly resistant to atmospheric and chemical corrosion. In addition, austenitic stainless steel also has excellent mechanical properties, making it a popular choice for an extensive amount of applications. At Sverdrup Steel, we provide high-quality austenitic stainless steel to clients in industries ranging from chemical and petrochemical to food processing, engineering and construction.

We provide all sorts of austenitic alloys, from general purpose stainless steel grades like 304 to high performance alloys for specific applications and niche industries. The versatility of this steel makes it an ideal choice for almost any purpose. Read more about our alloys and their properties in the section “Our Austenitic Alloys” below.

Advantages of austenitic stainless steel

  • Good ductility, and specific grades with high strength.
  • High tensile strength and ductility
  • Good to excellent corrosion resistance
  • Maintains shine over time
  • Non-magnetic, suitable for MRI equipment and tools
  • Very good formability and weldability
  • Good heat resistance

Our Austenitic Alloys

The austenitic stainless steel family is the largest and most widely used group of stainless steel. They display a wide range of properties due to their composition and metallurgical structure. At Sverdrup Steel, we are proud to offer a wide variety of austenitic alloys to meet our customers’ demands in various industries.

Whether you are looking for austenitic appliances that can endure extreme temperatures or alloys with excellent corrosion resistance, we have the perfect solution for you. Read about our austenitic products below, and feel free to use our calculation and conversion tools to identify the suitable alloy for your project. Visit the product pages by clicking on the product name. Here, you will find detailed information about mechanical properties, chemical composition, corrosion resistance, heat treatment, typical applications, and more.

304

AISI 304  (a.k.a. A2 and 18/8), is an austenitic chromium and nickel steel with improved machinability. The grade is a versatile, general purpose stainless steel with good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, to many organic and inorganic chemicals, to oxidizing acids like nitric acid, caustic solutions at moderate temperatures and to food and beverages. Grade 304 /304L is used in the chemical industry, food industry, pulp and paper industry and nuclear industry.

316L

AISI 316L is a molybdenum alloyed austenitic chromium-nickel steel with improved machinability. The grade is used for a wide range of industrial applications where 304 has insufficient corrosion resistance. In addition, type 316 shows good acid resistance and the steel is used in the chemical industry, apparatus engineering, sewage plants and piping industry.

6MO (UNS S31254)

The 6MO super austenitic steel has moderate tensile strength and high ductility. Its unique composition also possesses excellent corrosion resistance in seawater and various other industrial environments. Typically the alloy has PREN of 42 – 44, which ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. For these reasons, 6Mo makes an ideal choice for applications such as pumps, valves, pipework and chokes in the oil and gas industry.

904L

AISI 904L is a high nickel–molybdenum austenitic stainless steel with very high corrosion resistance, making it specifically suitable for handling medium-concentrated sulfuric acid solutions. Furthermore, it possesses excellent formability and good weldability. The unique composition makes it ideal for many industrial applications, including bleaching equipment in the pulp and paper industry, process equipment in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and seawater handling.

NITRONIC® 50

NITRONIC® 50 (UNS S20910) is manganese alloyed austenitic stainless steel that maintains its non-magnetic properties even when cold-worked. Due to increased chromium content, it has better corrosion resistance and twice the yield strength at room temperature compared to 316L and 317L. In addition, NITRONIC® 50 displays very good mechanical properties at both high and sub-zero temperatures, making it a reliable option for industries operating in extreme environments. Typical applications include marine hardware, pump shafting and petrochemical processing.

NITRONIC® 60

NITRONIC® 60 is silicon–manganese alloyed austenitic stainless steel with twice the yield strength of type 304 material. The increased silicon and manganese levels inhibit wear, galling and fretting. It also improves heat resistance, making the alloy fit for temperatures up to 1000°C. In addition, this alloy provides a significant lower cost way to fight wear and galling compared to Nickel or Cobalt based alloys.
